In memory of Jeanne Thorpe

Jeanne Thorpe 1949-2022

Jeanne Thorpe (née Cullen)
1949-2022

“If you want a job done ask a busy person”. Jeanne was just that person. She had time for everything, work, family, friends and clubs. She joined Pembroke Wanderers in 1969 when she was studying to become a solicitor. She went on to develop a thriving conveyancing practice in Margetson and Greene where she was a senior partner. She also sat on the Law Society’s fitness to practice committee. Many Pembroke members benefitted from Jeanne’s expertise in many and varied legal matters.

As well as hockey Jeanne was also an enthusiastic squash player with Sandycove Squash Club and a keen sailor with the Royal St. George yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire, sailing several times a week. These three sports complimented each other with their seasons. When she retired from them she took up golf and became a member of Greystones Golf Club.

Whatever sport Jeanne participated in her value to the management was quickly recognized. She was Club Captain in Pembroke Wanderers in 1983/85. She captained many teams and was on the Irish Junior Cup winning teams. She played a big role in the development of the club’s junior girls’ section. Her most significant role becoming the first female President of Pembroke in 1995/97 in the club’s 73 year history.

After retiring from playing Jeanne went on to take her coaching certificates and coached the Ladies 1st X1 before going on to coach the Irish Ladies under 21 team, an honour both for her and the club. Leinster Hockey recognized her value by appointing her to the Leinster Disciplinary Panel.

Jeanne progressed from hockey and turned her focus to golf and became Lady Captain of Greystones golf Club in 2015.

Jeanne made an invaluable contribution to Pembroke Wanderers and in recognition of this was awarded Honorary membership. She will be sorely missed by her many friends in Pembroke but especially by her Husband Des and sisters Sue and Judy and Nicky who also played in Pembroke along with their late sister Patricia.
