Pegasus next up for Ladies 2nds following Genesis win

irish junior cup

Lizzie de AraugoPembroke Ladies 2nds continued their winning streak and beat Genesis 2nds in round 2 of the Irish Junior Cup last Saturday. However, despite on paper looking like it would be Pembroke’s day, Genesis made Pembroke work extremely hard for the win.

Pembroke attacked well from the offset, and were unlucky not to convert a few very near chances in the opening 10 minutes, Maeve Faherty lashing one off the uprights shortly after the starting whistle. However, as a defensive unit Pembroke didn’t get their form quite right, and Genesis took full advantage, countering quickly and using the pace of their forwards to great effect.

About 15 minutes into the game the heavens opened and a torrential downpour tested even the hardy Pembroke supporters in the UCD stand. With both teams soaked through and freezing the game didn’t get much prettier after that. Nil all at half time, and Genesis were certainly the happier of the two sides going to the dug-out.

In the second half, Pembroke reasserted some of their more normal control of the game, and the deadlock was eventually broken when Jane Brownlee weaved her way into the circle before Lizzie de Araugo lofted a high ball way up over the keeper. Time seemed to stand still as it took an eternity for the ball to drop, and when it did It fell perfectly just inside the goals to go 1 nil up.

Shona Doyle made it two soon after, with a trademark direct route attack before striking one through the pads of the keeper. The game finished 2-0 and Pembroke progress to round 3 where they meet Pegasus in Pembroke on Sunday March 2nd.
