Pembroke hosts annual U16′s schools tournament

Pembroke Wanderers schools tournament

Saturday 7th September 2013 saw the fourth staging of Pembroke’s annual schools Under 16 tournaments. Unfortunately the weather did not match the high standard of hockey on show, particularly with several showers in the morning, but the matches certainly brightened the day.

The Girls tournament was played in the morning as normal and much good hockey resulted although few goals were scored despite plenty of goalmouth action. Lots of good hockey was on view, with a particularly strong emphasis on a passing game for all sides. Numerous chances were created and goalkeepers certainly earned their corn on the day.

The teams were generally fairly evenly matched and the key game ultimately fell between St. Andrews and Wesley with the former edging it 1-0, thus pushing them into the winners enclosure for the first time.

The Boys tournament followed in the afternoon and again the standard was excellent. All teams competed to their maximum, with a mix of passing and running styles opening up defences repeatedly. More goal chances than ever were created and scored, despite some excellent goalkeeping and last ditch interceptions and blocks. St. Andrews were clearly the team to beat but were ultimately untroubled, winning all four games to claim the trophy for the second time.

Thank You’s

Many thanks to the umpires for their strenuous efforts – President Bernie Barry, Daniel Thornton & Zach Waters for all of the morning matches, and Andrew Cooke, Brian Cleary & Marcus Blake for all of the afternoon matches.
